Silly EDP tricks

There are so many incredible things that can be done using a looper that go beyond simple livelooping. These tricks can be explained in written form but the most effective way to teach them probably are demo videos. Phil Clevenger has just set up a website for demo videos – so if you know a special technique with a looper (stuttering, quantized replace, whatever), please make a video of it and post it here:

Silly EDP tricks

Phil writes,

Maybe the name is too specific, really Mobius tricks, Echoloop tricks, Looperlative tricks, all would be welcome…

No time for me to provide content for a couple of weeks but if anyone wants to start, there is a Submit button there ūüôā

Will make it look and work nicer if it looks like we will get any real traction …

Interview with Live Looping Rick Walker on KUSP radio

This is a very long interview conducted by Robert Pollie for KUSP radio about my long career in music (conducted because of a retrospective concert that I just gave at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center).

I’ve been interviewed countless times in my life but this one feels really ‘definitive’, so, if anyone is interested, you can stream it here:

Y2K13 LOOPFEST donation request

Hi everybody,

This has been an exciting year with the advent of really beautifully and professionally produced
festivals in Europe and the UK (as the first official ‘satellites’ of Y2K13) this past summer.

The Fall promises to be exciting too,  with Noah Peterson producing Y2K13 Looping Festivals
for the very first time in Portland, Seattle and San Antonio, Texas
as well as a one day ‘Best of Y2K13 Loop Fest” in San Jose,¬†¬† “The Experimental Side of the
Y2K13 Loop Fest” in San Francisco and the MAIN FESTIVAL just outside of Santa Cruz.

We have lost our beloved venue this year for the first time in many years
and , try as we may,  we were unable to find another suitable venue inside of the
city limits of Santa Cruz.

We lucked out, however, because the TREASURES ROADHOUSE venue (a very nice small
professional venue with the best staging we’ve ever had for any California festival)
just opened up in Corralitos,  15 minutes drive from Santa Cruz on Saturday and Sunday,
October 19 + 20)

Also,  Brad and Sandy Taylor have generously donated their beautiful home for the
opening ceremonies of the Festival on Friday night,  October 18.

We will need to rent vehicles for artist and some audience transportation from our main compound and we will probably see a drop in attendance due to the newness of the venue and the transportation so we’ll be working with the most challenged financial situation in recent years.

Sooooo…………………If you have it in you financially, and spiritually.¬† we can
really use some monetary donations (and volunteer donations) so that we can pull this thing off, ¬†once again and also so that I can pay my wonderful staff for all their hard work over the entire week.¬†It’s a hell of a lot of work considering that it involves five different concerts so I always try to pay my staff well.

Any donations are welcome no matter how small (or large) and can be sent through
PAYPAL  to my account  at

Thanks so much, as always for making this wonderful festival possible.

and, just so you know,    a HUGE expansion of the festival in Northern Europe, the UK and
Southeast Asia is planned for Y2K14.¬†¬†¬†¬† I’m really excited about this prospect.

gratefully yours,     Rick Walker

Creating an International Travelling Live Loopers Database

CARPE DIEM: to all the Live Loopers who have traveled a long or short distance to, and performed at an International Live Looping Festival:

I am so gratified that the International Live Looping Festival concept that we pioneered in 2001 has spread, this summer  to London, Paris, Cologne, Berlin, Neunkirch (Switzerland) and in a few weeks, to Portland, Seattle, San Jose, Santa Cruz and San Antonio.

It suddenly occurs to me that with possible similar festivals planned next summer/fall in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Zurich, Zaghreb, Tallinn, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, Bangkok, Manila with the addition of repeats in all the places that had them this year

….that we are now poised to create a DATABASE of live looping artists with contact numbers so that we can all, within our means, begin to travel to other cities and countries to continue our artistry.

To be willing to say to the Live Looping community,¬† “I live in this city and I would gladly put you up for a couple of days if you came here to do a live looping gig that I produce for us”,¬† whether that gig be a one off event or a small or even large festival”¬† would greatly reduce the cost of travel and increase our community.

In that spirit,  I would like to propose that we create such a list. replete with a photo,  URL of website or sound/video examples, description/bio of yourself as an artist (brief) and contact information for other loopers to connect with you.

1) It will need to be collated  before it is made public and should probably be
sent to an individual collators e-mail list, instead of these forums

2)¬† Whoever collates it (and I will volunteer if there are no other volunteers though I’m in the middle of coordinating the large main festival so it will take me a bit of time) should then post it to
       c) this Loopers Delight Face Book Page as a document
       d) any other relevant music forum that we think is appropriate

3) whoever has access to this list should promise to use it only for the purposes of connecting our community and should not give it out for any other promotional purposes or sell it to anyone for commercial gain.

I would imagine that it would be easiest to send to an individual e-mail address for the time being.

Would anyone want to volunteer to help me with such a database (even just taking in information now until the Main Festival is over).

Mercedes-Benz on looping

Who would have thought that Mercedes-Benz runs a web magazine “that documents and reflects contemporary culture and a clever, fun way of living”. Whatever … the music department of this magazine contains these articles about looping, both written by Pedo Knopp:

Loop Pedals

History of Looping

It is interesting how many different views on looping are possible. I get the feeling that those parts of my “history of livelooping” article that mention Riley/Reich/Fripp/Eno were “remixed” into this history of looping article, but the author focuses more on DJs, turntablism, and sampling
